Dr. Tom Malone is University Distinguished Scholar Emeritus at North Carolina State. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he was elected Foreign Secretary in 1978. He also chaired the Academy’s Geophysics Research Board and its Board on Atmospheric Physics and Climate. He left a tenured faculty appointment at MIT in 1955 to join The Travelers Insurance Companies where he went on to become Senior Vice President and Director of Research. While on leave from MIT between 1949 and 1951, Dr. Tom Malone is University Distinguished Scholar Emeritus at North Carolina State. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he was elected Foreign Secretary in 1978. He also chaired the Academy’s Geophysics Research Board and its Board on Atmospheric Physics and Climate.
While on leave from MIT between 1949 and 1951, Malone edited the 1300 page Compendium of Meteorology that set the stage for meteorological research in the second half of the 20th Century. He returned to academia in 1970 as Professor of Physics and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Connecticut. A past national president of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, he was named Founding Director of the Sigma Xi Center in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park in 1992. He has also served as national president of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union.
Tom was Secretary General of the Committee on Atmospheric Sciences of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) that, in a series of reports from 1965 to 1967, proposed the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP). He was a co-convener of ICSU’s 1984 conference in Ottawa that led to the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP). Founding Secretary General of ICSU’s Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment, he has been a Vice President of ICSU and was its Treasurer from 1978 to 1984. He chaired the U. S. National Commission for UNECO from 1965 to 1967. He was awarded the International Meteorological Organization Prize in 1984 for “scientific eminence and a record of work done in the field of international meteorological organizations.” His international work has also been recognized by an international award from the AAAS in 1994 and by an international jury of twelve scientists from eight countries that selected him for the 1991 St. Francis of Assisi Prize for the Environment. Most recently (2002), he was inducted into the U.S. state of Iowa Hall of Fame.

Dr. Malone has been an integral advisor to ENTOVATION International, Ltd since the 1990’s. His insights are penetrating; and his guiding words an inspiration to others around the globe. He has been featured in our events and initiatives, such as Global Learn Day, the New York E100 Roundtable, the US State Department Conference on ‘Converting Russia to a Knowledge Economy’ and chairing the initiative for a ‘Western Hemisphere Knowledge Partnership and Global Environmental Governance.’ He is actively visible in forums such as the Global Knowledge Partnership and other significant programs and electronic dialogues. His recent article has been selected for the forthcoming E100 Readings: Principles, Practices and Standards; and he serves now (November 2003) as the Honorary President of the Latin American Forum on Knowledge-based Development – a joint event with the E100 Roundtable and the Assembly for The IberoAmerican Community of Knowledge Systems sponsored by the Center for Knowledge Systems, Tenologico de Monterrey.
